Culture Buzz A survey in Fabulous magazine reveals some surprises about how we idealize the female form (NSFW). Though there’s no way to tell if their survey was accurate, the magazine says men in the U.K. find a size 12 to be ideal, whereas women think a size 8 is the right size to be (the average national body size there is 14).

Bedtime for Bibi

The only good thing which could result from Bibi Netanyahu’s May 24 speech to a joint session of the US Congress is that it may open people’s eyes after a very long nap. If so, it will have served a useful purpose and could be a turning point. A lot of intelligent Americans and Europeans are in denial. They have generally viewed criticism of Israel from any quarter with suspicion and skepticism. If one brings up the larger topic of Zionism’s shadowy history and adverse consequences, they become even more suspicious.
But the Likud kingpin’s magnificent con job—and the unseemly performance of a servile Congress in embracing it—should give every true-blue American who has not been brainwashed a wake-up call. What exactly is going on here, and why? Has Washington’s leadership abdicated its responsibilities to the American people and humanity? Has it simply offshored American foreign policy to Tel Aviv? Such appears to be the case, and it is downright embarrassing.

911 hoax behind SWAT response A Eugene man falls victim to “swatting"

Eugene police said they had no choice Monday night but to take seriously a 911 caller’s startling claim that he had just shot his father inside a River Road area apartment and was about to kill himself.
“It sounded like a critical call,” police spokeswoman Melinda McLaughlin said.
Fourteen police officers arrived at the Riviera Village complex on Corliss Lane in response to the 9:23 p.m. emergency call.
They left the scene after determining that the report suggesting a potential murder-suicide had occurred was bogus, McLaughlin said.
Investigators suspect the 911 caller obtained the name, address and telephone number of a man who lived at the apartment, then used that information to retaliate against the tenant after the pair squabbled while playing an online game on their Xbox video systems, McLaughlin said.
The apartment resident — a 26-year-old man who spoke with The Register-Guard on condition of anonymity — said he was targeted because he refused to give another player content that he had created for a game called FortressCraft.
“He tried to twist my arm over something relatively small in the game,” the Eugene man said.
For the past several years, cybercriminals have settled scores with foes by “swatting” — the name given to a telephone scheme that involves calling 911 to fake an emergency that could draw a police SWAT team response.

Hey, I think that's our kid, 3,233rd from the left: Stunning pictures of island where penguins have created the world's largest crèche
These stunning aerial images of a King Penguin colony in South Georgia show just how extraordinary penguin parenting really is.
In what looks to be the world's largest creche, thousands of King Penguins instinctively herd their recently born young into giant huddles to stop them freezing to death
Parental instinct takes over in the inhospitable climate of the South Atlantic and the chicks with their long, brown, downy coats are made to crowd together to retain their body warmth in the equivalent of bird creches - visible as brown swathes on our photo.

Yemen's Death Spiral: How the Economy and the Military Will Play
http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7526-Yemen-s-Death-Spiral-How-the-Economy-and-the-Military-Will-Play
Yemen's revolution has been a slow-burning one. Three months after an 18-day whirlwind of protests tossed Egypt's Hosni Mubarak from power, Yemen's youthful protesters are still in the thick of their own Arab uprising. However, though hounded and abandoned by senior members of his party army and tribe, President Ali Abdullah Saleh somehow continues to cling to power.
Time and again, Saleh has reneged on apparent agreements to step down. But time may now truly be running out as rival factions of the military begin to turn on each other and the economy heads into a death spiral.
(See scenes from Yemen.)
The events of the week so far are ominous. Yemen's youthful protesters decided to go on the offensive and tighten the screws on their embattled ruler, who was holed up behind the high walls of his presidential palace, still dithering over an initiative brokered by gulf states that would see him exchange power for immunity. The Civic Coalition of Revolutionary Youth, one of the leading protest groups, unveiled a plan to escalate efforts to oust Saleh that includes national hunger strikes, civil disobedience, blockades of roads and ports, as well as a march on the presidential palace.

Authorities in South Carolina say they arrested a 50-year-old convenience store clerk who sold cigarettes and smokeless tobacco to boys after they let him spank them.
Lexington County deputies said Tuesday that they started investigating Terrence Bryant (Who seems to suffer a poor quality of mustache) ---> after the father of a 12-year-old boy found him with a pack of Newport cigarettes earlier this month.
Detectives say Bryant sold the boy cigarettes at least five times from his pickup truck, spanking the child in the parking lot over his clothes.
Deputies say Bryant also sold tobacco to two 15-year-old boys after spanking them.
Bryant is charged with three counts of lewd act upon a child under age 16. He is awaiting a bond hearing and deputies say he doesn't have an attorney yet.
Lexington County is in central South Carolina.

Why Gamers Need to Support Ninja Theory

Warning: This editorial contains spoilers for Heavenly Sword and Enslaved: Odyssey to the West.
One of the most controversial moments in gaming for 2010 was the announcement of Ninja Theory's new take on the Devil May Cry series, simply titled DmC. Ninja Theory, developers behind the PlayStation 3 exclusive Heavenly Sword and the multiplatform Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, drew heavy scrutiny for their drastically different take on Devil May Cry series protagonist Dante. This new Dante, seemingly designed for the Twilight crowd, was universally hated by fans, and both Ninja Theory and Capcom received heavy backlash. However, I'm here to tell you that we as gamers should have faith in Ninja Theory, and that Devil May Cry is in good hands.

Child Brides

Because the wedding was illegal and a secret, except to the invited guests, and because marriage rites in Rajasthan are often conducted late at night, it was well into the afternoon before the three girl brides in this dry farm settlement in the north of India began to prepare themselves for their sacred vows. They squatted side by side on the dirt, a crowd of village women holding sari cloth around them as a makeshift curtain, and poured soapy water from a metal pan over their heads. Two of the brides, the sisters Radha and Gora, were 15 and 13, old enough to understand what was happening. The third, their niece Rajani, was 5. She wore a pink T-shirt with a butterfly design on the shoulder. A grown-up helped her pull it off to bathe.

Vitaly Borker thought he had found a new way of making money on the internet. On his website DecorMyEyes.com, Borker marketed cheap knock-off sunglasses as the real thing and added insult to injury by providing the worst possible customer service. As he anticipated, the tidal wave of negative comments boosted his site to Google’s first page. When disgruntled customers complained, he responded by threatening to kill or rape them. In one case, he told a customer’s boss that his employee was a gay drug dealer. This behavior only increased the flood of complaints, which in turn brought more attention to the website.

Buchanan - What Must We Defend?

"We need to be honest with the president, with the Congress, with the American people" about the consequences of cutting the defense budget, said Secretary of Defense Robert Gates in his valedictory policy address to the American Enterprise Institute.
"(A) smaller military, no matter how superb, will be able to go fewer places and do fewer things."
Gates seeks to ignite a debate the country seems reluctant to have. With a federal budget running out of balance by 10 percent of gross domestic product, what are we Americans willing to sacrifice? What are we willing to forego? What are we willing to cut?

Republican Sports Fans And The Affirmative Action They Cheer For

Over the years, the thing I’ve been vilified for the most is my pointing out, patiently, that there are long-lasting connections between ancestry and average intelligence—and that these matter for a broad range of issues, including, of course, immigration. (Here are my 2007Frequently Asked Questions lists about IQ and race.)
It’s not hard to understand why most Democrats are so angry and unreasonable about this. It suggests that that America’s post 1965 immigration disaster, which they constantly gloat about because of what they think will be its short-term political effects, will in fact prove profoundly negative for America.
