"It feels like a dream and sometimes I can't believe it myself," he says.
But there was one description nobody wanted to utter — at least not publicly. Not Blue Jays executives, who admit they didn't see this coming when they acquired Bautista from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a minor league catcher in 2008. Not the scouts from other teams, still groping for a way to pitch the man who has transformed himself from bench player to dominant force through a reconstructed swing and a chance to play every day.
Finally, after Bautista launched three home runs at Minnesota's Target Field on May 15, teammate Corey Patterson couldn't contain himself.
"I've never seen anything like it other than Barry Bonds hitting," said Patterson, who has at least one hit in 12 of 13 games since he began batting directly ahead of Bautista. "It's impressive."
