(GENOA) — The latest sex-abuse case to rock the Catholic Church is unfolding in the archdiocese of an influential Italian Cardinal who has been working with Pope Benedict XVI on reforms to respond to prior scandals of pedophile priests.
Father Riccardo Seppia, a 51-year-old parish priest in the village of Sastri Ponente, near Genoa, was arrested last Friday, May 13, on pedophilia and drug charges. Investigators say that in tapped mobile-phone conversations, Seppia asked a Moroccan drug dealer to arrange sexual encounters with young and vulnerable boys.

Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) pledged during his run for office to be a veritable stick in the mud on issues of philosophical concern even if it meant agitating his fellow Congressional Republicans. Now, as the Senate rushes against the clock to pass an extension of the USA Patriot Act, he's living up to his word.
The Kentucky Republican has objected to an attempt by Senate leadership to consider the national security measure on an expedited basis. His objections are not necessarily driven by ideological opposition to the bill, though he remains an outspoken critic. Instead Paul has dug in his heels because Senate Democrats have refused to consider several amendments that he wants offered, chief among them language that would restrict national security officials from examining gun dealer records in an effort to track potential terrorists.

Facebook is adding two Republicans from the Bush White House to its lobby team as it gears up for the debate over consumer privacy legislation.
Joel Kaplan, who served as deputy chief of staff under former President George W. Bush, will join Facebook on June 13 as vice president of U.S. public policy. He will report to vice president of global public policy Marne Levine.
Accompanying Kaplan from the Bush White House will be Myriah Jordan, who will join the firm’s congressional relations team on June 6 as policy manager. She most recently served as general counsel to Sen. Richard Burr (R-N.C.).
Cathie Martin, who had been managing Facebook’s outreach on Capitol Hill, will take a leave of absence starting in early June to tend to personal matters. There is no timetable for her return; in the interim, Jordan and public policy director Tim Sparapani will take over congressional relations.

Bizarre shrimp-like monsters that were the world's largest predators for millions of years grew even larger and survived much longer than thought, scientists find.
The creatures, known as anomalocaridids, were giant predators (ranging from 2 to possibly 6 feet in length) with soft-jointed bodies and toothy maws with spiny limbs in front to snag worms and other prey.
"They were really at the top of the food chain," said researcher Peter Van Roy, a paleobiologist at Ghent University in Belgium, and formerly at Yale. "The uncontested top predators of their time."

The FBI said a man matching the physical description of the mullet-wearing suspect sought in two previous holdups walked into the bank and handed a teller a note, saying he was robbing the bank, had a gun, and would hurt the teller if she did not cooperate.
The robber was dressed in the mullet bandit's garb, including Seattle Mariners baseball cap and large dark sunglasses.
Initial surveillance photos suggested he had shed his distinctive hairdo to evade detection, swapping out his mullet -- a style popular in the 1980s that is short on the top, tight on the sides and long in the back -- for something more up to date.
But subsequent images revealed the suspect had merely tucked his mullet up underneath his baseball cap.
"Tricky guy," said Harry Trombitas, the FBI agent tracking him.

Members plans to be in Joplin on Sunday when President Barack Obama is to visit and may attend at a memorial service for storm victims.
