Al-Jazeera footage captures 'western troops on the ground' in Libya

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7817-Al-Jazeera-footage-captures-western-troops-on-the-ground-in-Libya

Armed westerners have been filmed on the front line with rebels near Misrata in the first apparent confirmation that foreign special forces are playing an active role in the Libyan conflict.
A group of six westerners are clearly visible in a report by al-Jazeera from Dafniya, described as the westernmost point of the rebel lines west of the town of Misrata. Five of them were armed and wearing sand-coloured clothes, peaked caps, and cotton Arab scarves.
The sixth, apparently the most senior of the group, was carrying no visible weapon and wore a pink, short-sleeve shirt. He may be an intelligence officer. The group is seen talking to rebels and then quickly leaving on being spotted by the television crew.

Karzai: NATO risks being seen as 'occupying force'

Karzai said he would no longer allow NATO airstrikes on houses because they have caused too many civilian casualties.
A recent strike that mistakenly killed a group of children and women would be the last, he added.
"If they don't stop air strikes on Afghan homes, their presence in Afghanistan will be considered as an occupying force and against the will of the Afghan people," Karzai told a news conference in Kabul Tuesday.
"From this moment, airstrikes on the houses of people are not allowed," he added.

A "broken food system" means that the price of some staples will more than double by 2030, battering the world's poorest people, who spend up to 80 percent of their income on food, the British-based aid group predicted.

Women Fighting and Dying in War, Despite Combat Exclusion Policy

On June 25, 2005, Jimenez was riding in the back of a truck carrying 14 female Marines near the Iraqi hotbed of Fallujah. The all-female unit was tasked with searching and questioning Iraqi women at security checkpoints, ensuring they were not armed with explosives. Since females were not allowed to sleep at the checkpoints as their male counterparts were, every day the women would be driven to and from an American base, making them a visible target each time they hit the road. It was only a matter of time before their luck would run out, and that night, it did.
A car approached their convoy, moments before it ran straight towards the women's truck. Packed with explosives, it detonated on impact, enveloping all 14 women in a deadly fireball. Most of the women were severely burned. Two women died immediately, one later that night, in what would become the deadliest attack on servicewomen since 1991.

Jewish Worshippers, Soldiers Clash In West Bank

The Israeli military says soldiers have forcibly removed dozens of Jewish worshippers who refused to leave a holy site inside a Palestinian city in the West Bank.
An estimated 1,600 worshippers entered the city of Nablus early Monday for nighttime prayers at a site believed to be the tomb of the biblical Joseph. The visit was coordinated with the military and Palestinian security forces.
The military says about an additional 200 Israelis went in without permission, and 50 refused to leave the tomb building early Monday. The military said soldiers removed them, arresting three.
The military criticized the Israelis for endangering themselves and the troops guarding the prayers. A Jewish worshipper at the tomb without permission was killed by a Palestinian policeman on April 24.

Greece said to be readying new cuts

European leaders are trying to negotiate a new bailout deal for Greece that would expand outside intervention in the country’s finances, the Financial Times reported late Sunday.
Citing people involved in the talks, the FT reported the privatization of state assets and international involvement in tax collection to be among the options being considered.
And, a Reuters report had Greece’s finance minister on Saturday denying a report in the German weekly magazine Spiegel that Greece had missed fiscal targets required to obtain its next portion of a 110 billion-euro bailout approved by the IMF and European leaders last year.
The measures are meant to reduce Greece’s budget deficit from 10.5% of gross domestic product last year to under 1% by 2015.

Self-Defense or Murder: Oklahoma Case Sparks Debate

Pharmacist Jerome Ersland sits in the courtroom as jury selection gets underway in his trial at the Oklahoma County Courthouse in Oklahoma City on May 16, 2011.

A story of crime and punishment that is dividing an Oklahoma community has now entered the online world, raising questions about what is self-defense and first-degree murder.
The debate stems from the life sentence an Oklahoma City, Okla., jury handed down to pharmacist Jerome Ersland on May 26 for a first-degree murder conviction in the killing of 16 year-old Antwun Parker.
Ersland's attorneys told jurors throughout the murder trial that their client had acted in self-defense when he shot Parker six times during an attempted robbery at his Oklahoma City pharmacy. Prosecutors, meanwhile, argued Ersland went too far.

History Salutes Civil War Sesquicentennial Anniversary With 'Gettysburg' Doc

This Memorial Day, History launches a four-year initiative to both honor and commemorate the Civil War, which marks its sesquicentennial anniversary in 2011, with the two-hour documentary Gettysburg.
Executive-produced by Tony (Unstoppable; Man on Fire; Top Gun) and Ridley (Gladiator; Black Hawk Down; American Gangster), the feature documentary is narrated by Sam Rockwell (Conviction, Iron Man 2, The Green Mile).
Gettysburg strips away any romanticized veneer of the Civil War and presents the engagement in a new light: a visceral, terrifying experience with everything on the line. At its core, this is the story of the soldiers on the ground, not the generals who commanded from behind the frontlines. CGI and action footage place viewers in the midst of the fighting, delivering an emotional cinematic and information-packed experience, which examines turning points, technology and little-known facts about what is arguably America's greatest battle, according to History officials.

Why Are Some People Double-Jointed?

At any party, there's always that guy who can bend his fingers freakishly far back, and then brags about being "double-jointed" – but there's actually no such thing.

The term double-jointed implies that a person with unusual flexibility has twice the average number of joints, which allows for their increased range of motion. But that's anatomically impossible – except for rare instances, the majority of people have the same number of joints, the points in the body where two bones meet.

Would Meek Compliance Have Saved Jason Kemp's Life?

Yesterday the ACLU of Colorado filed a federal lawsuit against five Colorado State Patrol officers in connection with the shooting death of 31-year-old Jason Kemp at his home in Grand Junction last July. According to KKCO, the local NBC affiliate, Trooper Ivan Lawyer and Cpl. Kirk Firko "were called to an accident near Glade Park Road and South Broadway involving a pickup pulling a trailer and jet ski" in which "the jet ski fell off the trailer and the truck was stuck in a neighbor's yard." Callers "said it appeared as if the three people trying to remove the truck were intoxicated." When Lawyer and Firko arrived at the scene, the men were gone, but the troopers followed them to Kemp's house down the street. Kemp refused to let them in, saying (correctly) that they needed a warrant. Together Lawyer and Firko kicked in the door, and Lawyer shot Kemp in the chest at close range. Later he claimed that "Kemp lifted and extended his arm upward as if he was pointing a gun at him," but no weapon was found anywhere near his body.

Your Commute Is Killing You

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7770-Your-Commute-Is-Killing-You

This week, researchers at Umea University in Sweden released a startling finding: Couples in which one partner commutes for longer than 45 minutes are 40 percent likelier to divorce. The Swedes could not say why. Perhaps long-distance commuters tend to be poorer or less educated, both conditions that make divorce more common. Perhaps long transit times exacerbate corrosive marital inequalities, with one partner overburdened by child care and the other overburdened by work. But perhaps the Swedes are just telling us something we all already know, which is that commuting is bad for you. Awful, in fact.

Commuting is a migraine-inducing life-suck—a mundane task about as pleasurable as assembling flat-pack furniture or getting your license renewed, and you have to do it every day. If you are commuting, you are not spending quality time with your loved ones. You are not exercising, doing challenging work, having sex, petting your dog, or playing with your kids (or your Wii). You are not doing any of the things that make human beings happy. Instead, you are getting nauseous on a bus, jostled on a train, or cut off in traffic.

The draft is to be discussed at a public meeting in Los Angeles on June 7 and would later go to the state's Occupational Safety & Health Standards Board for a ruling on whether it becomes part of state code.

Retired pastor Kirk Minor remembers a time when working with his church was centered around people, and not rhetoric – and he’s wondering where those days went.
“We’re finding more and more that there are a lot of people out there doing a lot of talking and protesting and bellyaching, but fewer people actually walking the walk,” said Minor, author of Journey Across The Tiber: My Many Rooms. “We have extremists protesting funerals of gay soldiers, pundits decrying the use of abbreviations for the word Christmas and activists campaigning for prayer in public schools. These are all very divisive issues, and have little to do with the good works the Bible wants the faithful to perform.”

And yet the streets were already filling with columns of refugees; Germans from Lithuania, whose abandoned cattle roamed the countryside. Light tremors echoed distant detonations. Sometimes at night, a red glow was visible in the east, where border towns along the Niemen River were burning: Unmistakable signs that Soviet forces were moving inexorably closer.

But industry experts say being able to follow filet mignon, rib eye and other cuts of beef back to the ranch can pay off in multiple ways, including boosting consumer confidence, upping the value of a dinner, and cutting the time needed to track recalled meats.

Many conservatives have called on Perry to enter a field which could have room for a social and fiscal conservative with Perry’s energy and charisma. Moon has more water than believed

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7745-Moon-has-more-water-than-believed

Most scientists believe that the moon was created through the accretion of material thrown out by the impact of a huge object hitting Earth. The moon’s once-presumed dryness was thought to have been caused by the dispersion of hydrogen through that catastrophic event. Finding water in such quantity as described in the new research casts a question over this prevailing theory.
James Van Orman, an associate professor of geochemistry at Case Western Reserve University and member of the team behind the new discovery, said that finding the water does not invalidate the overall creation theory. But he said there will have to be new work done to understand the chain of events following such an impact.
The surprising discovery came by looking at moon samples retrieved by the Apollo 17, a lunar mission dating to the time when scientists believed the moon was nothing but a dry expanse. Dr. Van Orman said in a phone interview that getting funding and permission to re-examine these old samples was no easy task. But the findings were dramatic. Samples showed 100 times as much water as had been thought.
“I don’t think any of us expected there would be as much as we found,” Dr. Van Orman said. “These samples provide the best window we have to the amount of water in the interior of the moon.”

Reading John Le Carre's latest book, Our Kind of Traitor (and living in England for the past few months), has set me thinking a little about Britain's current place in the world.

Back in the first decades of the twentieth century, atlases depicted much of the land surface of the globe in pink, the color of the British Empire and its dominions (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa, and much of east and west Africa, Oceania, the Caribbean, the Middle East, etc.). Today politicians and economists say the country is in the throes of the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. There are across-the-board budget cuts, a major trade deficit, severe unemployment and declining industries and services. Even in Europe, Britain plays second or third fiddle, its economy lagging behind, or way behind, Germany's and France's.

Now, as the Senate rushes against the clock to pass an extension of the USA Patriot Act, he's living up to his word.

The Kentucky Republican has objected to an attempt by Senate leadership to consider the national security measure on an expedited basis. His objections are not necessarily driven by ideological opposition to the bill, though he remains an outspoken critic. Instead Paul has dug in his heels because Senate Democrats have refused to consider several amendments that he wants offered, chief among them language that would restrict national security officials from examining gun dealer records in an effort to track potential terrorists.

The robber was dressed in the mullet bandit's garb, including Seattle Mariners baseball cap and large dark sunglasses.
Initial surveillance photos suggested he had shed his distinctive hairdo to evade detection, swapping out his mullet -- a style popular in the 1980s that is short on the top, tight on the sides and long in the back -- for something more up to date.
But subsequent images revealed the suspect had merely tucked his mullet up underneath his baseball cap.
"Tricky guy," said Harry Trombitas, the FBI agent tracking him.

You may think you understand how the Patriot Act allows the government to spy on its citizens. Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Oregon) says it’s worse than you’ve heard.
Congress is set to reauthorize three controversial provisions of the surveillance law as early as Thursday. But Wyden says that what Congress will renew is a mere fig leaf for a far broader legal interpretation of the Patriot Act that the government keeps to itself — entirely in secret. Worse, there are hints that the government uses this secret interpretation to gather what one Patriot-watcher calls a “dragnet” for massive amounts of information on private citizens; the government portrays its data-collection efforts much differently.

How Animals Sense Potentially Harmful Acids

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7719-How-Animals-Sense-Potentially-Harmful-Acids

All animals face the challenge of deciding which chemicals in the environment are useful and which are harmful. A new study greatly improves our understanding of how animals sense an important class of potentially harmful chemicals: weak acids. The study appears online on May 16 in the Journal of General Physiology.
Weak acids like acetic acid (vinegar) and propionic acid (present in fermented foods like Swiss cheese) are shunned by many animals, and with good reason. Many organic acids in the environment can have widespread detrimental effects. Humans ingest these substances despite the fact that they actually elicit "irritating" sensations, a physiological response that may have been vital for our ancestors' survival.

A Discussion About Banning The Burqa In Australia

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7718-A-Discussion-About-Banning-The-Burqa-In-Australia

Senator Cory Bernardi provides an argument in favour of banning the burqa in this TV discussion. One of the commentators in the discussion suggested that banning the burqu might encourage radicalisation, but doesn’t stop to think that the increase in the number of women wearing this garment might actually be the result of radicalisation. The increase in the wearing of garments like the burqa seems to have taken place at the same time as demands for the expansion of halal food, apartheid measures such as Muslim only swimming sessions, the banning of criticism of Islam, and as the increased efforts by Islam to dominate the social space in a whole range of diverse areas is taking place.

Seized from the site were 20 bottles of vodka, 12 bottles of tequila, and 200 beer cans. Police also found three guns, 20 cell phones, 180 individual doses of marijuana and 90 doses of heroin.

The Near-Extinction Of American Bison In The 1800’s

http://tiny.cc/sw75c

As the populations of the United States pushed West in the early 1800’s, a lucrative trade for the fur, skin, and meat of the American Bison began in the great plains. Bison slaughter was further encouraged by the US government as a means of starving out or removing Native American populations that relied on the bison for food. Hunting of bison became so prevalent that travelers on trains in the Midwest would shoot bison during long-haul train trips.

While fracking and Net Neutrality have little in common, Pittsburgh's ordinance uses powerful legal concepts that may be useful for preserving Internet freedoms. Like Pittsburgh has done with fracking, any community can enact an ordinance that enforces Net Neutrality at the local level, as the Internet Freedom, Broadband Promotion, and Consumer Protection Act of 2011 aspires to do at the federal level. And, they can do so now ... without waiting for Congress. Firstly, the Pittsburgh ordinance enforces the right of communities to democratic self-governance. Second, the ordinance strips corporations of their Constitutional rights if they seek to engage in fracking. The organization that assisted Pittsburgh in drafting the ordinance explains how these ordinances are designed to work:"

How to publish a Hindu newspaper in Pakistan

This is, in fact, the first Hindu newspaper in Pakistan. The guy literally carries around a desktop PC on his shoulders to get the prepped content to the printer; he taught himself how to use the computer over the course of 8-10 years, and learned how to do desktop publishing with tools we'd consider antiquated in the wealthy US. He sells the paper for cheap, because the audience is poor; mostly boot-polishers and farmers. On some nights his family goes hungry because he uses all their resources to put out the paper. An inspiring story.
A technical note: TIME's video player annoyingly crops out all the subtitles, play it full screen so you can read them (unless you're a Hindi speaker, in which case you won't need them).

Woman accused of trying to sell girl's virginity

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7695-Woman-accused-of-trying-to-sell-girl-s-virginity

A Salt Lake City woman has been charged with offering her 13-year-old daughter's virginity to a man for $10,000.
The woman, 32-year-old Felicia Rae McClure, was charged Monday in Utah's 3rd District Court with two first-degree felony counts of aggravated sex abuse of a child and two second-degree felony counts of sexual exploitation of a minor.
If convicted, McClure faces a lifetime prison sentence for each first-degree felony and a zero to 15 year sentence for each second-degree felony.
In court papers, prosecutors allege that McClure had discussed letting her daughter perform oral sex and other sex acts with an adult male. The negotiated offer and an arrangement to exchange the teen's virginity for money were detailed in a string of text messages which were seen by McClure's boyfriend, who called police, court papers say.

But there was one description nobody wanted to utter — at least not publicly. Not Blue Jays executives, who admit they didn't see this coming when they acquired Bautista from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a minor league catcher in 2008. Not the scouts from other teams, still groping for a way to pitch the man who has transformed himself from bench player to dominant force through a reconstructed swing and a chance to play every day.
Finally, after Bautista launched three home runs at Minnesota's Target Field on May 15, teammate Corey Patterson couldn't contain himself.
"I've never seen anything like it other than Barry Bonds hitting," said Patterson, who has at least one hit in 12 of 13 games since he began batting directly ahead of Bautista. "It's impressive."

It'll let you filter all the social networking stuff for a particular group of people, so you can focus on the 4 or 10 people you actually care about. And it's got integrated group chat, through Facebook chat or Windows Live Messenger. (Microsoft compares it to BBM.) Also, there's now threading across services, a lot like webOS—you can start a conversation in SMS and pick it up in Facebook chat. You can (ugh, finally) bring all of your email accounts together in one view too—and there's full message threading, which looks pretty decent. Same for Calendars, which now supports Facebook events. Oh, and People now has Twitter. All good, all things it should be doing.

Europe Has Immigration Problems on Steroids

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7684-Europe-Has-Immigration-Problems-on-Steroids

For all the problems we think we have with immigration, Europe's problems far exceed ours. The U.S. has always had a history of panic about new and alien groups pouring into our country (Irish, Italians, Jews, Chinese, Japanese, Vietnamese, and now Hispanics). But all of these groups came here to become American; they integrated and contributed.

By and large, the same is true of Muslim immigrants to the U.S. today-particularly Iranians and Afghans. In Europe, however, many in the flood of Muslim immigrants are not integrating well-partly out of today's spate of Islamism but partly because ordinary Europeans find these immigrants adhere to an alien culture.
Europeans, after the horrors and genocides of World War II, made a commitment to open their doors to needy immigrants. England is awash with Pakistanis; France with North Africans; Germany with Turks from religious villages; and the Scandinavian countries have been the most generous of all, taking in Somalis, Iraqis, Moroccans, and others. All are creating trouble on two fronts: social integration and horrific welfare costs. The educated elites, who run Europe, have ideological notions that do not jibe with the realities faced by ordinary working Europeans who have not found these immigrants a benefit to their lives.

Tacoma homeowner opens fire on burglars; 1 dead, 1 wounded

The incident happened around 4:40 a.m. Monday at a home in the 400 block of South 38th Street.
Neighbor Trudi Mann woke up to sounds of people arguing next door, then heard two gunshots.
"A little before four, I heard gunshots and at that point called police," she said. "It's scary. My kids are grown, but I told my son I'd be a little concerned. He keeps our garage really locked up."

Tacoma police said the homeowner was woken up by dogs barking. He had been a victim of burglaries recently and went outside to investigate.
The man spotted two burglars trying to break into his garage and home.

"He was armed, held them at gun point. And at one point while he was detaining them, both subjects charged at him. He fired at both and hit both of them, " said Mark Fulghum, Tacoma Police Department.

Officers said one of the suspects died at the scene. The other suspect was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

He has spearheaded efforts to stop or reduce the use of food additives like trans fats, salt, and food dyes; ban the marketing of junk foods to children; lower consumption of sugary drinks; improve the country's food safety mechanisms; and get healthier foods into schools. In turn, the food industry (and sometimes the press) has dubbed Jacobson "chief of the food police."

This year, the CSPI has organized Food Day, its "most ambitious project ever," a day of education and advocacy featuring hundreds of local events that will be held on October 24. Here, Jacobson discusses dietary supplements, how young people are changing America's food systems, and why we shouldn't spend so much time talking about high-fructose corn syrup.

Provider A offers a three-month contract for the price of $400. Provider B offers a twelve-month contract for the price of $1,000. I strongly suggest that we go with Provider A for several reasons. First, it will be easier to obtain $400, so we will be able to launch the show much sooner than would be possible with the alternative. Second, the three-month contract is preferable in case the show really sucks and needs to be discontinued.

Gender revolution hits Arab world in 'The Source'

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7661-Gender-revolution-hits-Arab-world-in-The-Source

In a remote village in North Africa, women use the only weapon they have — sex — and go on a "love strike" that challenges traditional gender roles.

Director Radu Mihaileanu says he sees the fictional gender revolt depicted in his new movie "The Source" as crucial to the success of popular uprisings that have toppled dictators in Tunisia and Egypt this year and still smolder across the Arab world.

"The second revolution that's needed, it seems to me, is one in the home, that will bring about gender equality in the private sphere," Mihaileanu told reporters Saturday at the Cannes Film Festival, where the movie is competing for the top prize, the Palme d'Or.

Mihaileanu said the movie was inspired by a decade-old news story about women from a village in Turkey who, fed up with their arduous traditional task of fetching water from a distant well, started withholding sex.

A human rights group has raised Friday's death toll to 44, making it one of the deadliest days since an uprising against President Bashar Assad's regime began two months ago. At least 900 civilians have been killed in the regime's crackdown on dissent.

Non-white British population reaches 9.1 million

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7650-Non-white-British-population-reaches-9.1-million

The white British population has stayed the same since 2001; there has been an increase in births, but there has also been a similar number of people migrating.
The non-white British population has grown by 4.1% a year, adding up to 37.4% growth – 2.5 million – over the whole period. The only group to shrink is the white Irish population – down from 646,600 in 2001 to 574,200, due to falling birthrates and migration.
A rise in the "other white" population from 1.4 million to 1.9 million is not simply due to eastern Europeans arriving, said the ONS statistician responsible for the report, but also because of the arrival of people from Commonwealth countries such as Australia and New Zealand.
The mixed-race population is up nearly 50% to almost a million for the first time – up from 672,000 in 2001 to 986,600 in 2009. A third are mixed African-Caribbean and white, followed by Asian/white. The ONS said this was not a result of increasing birthrates but because "the population is mixing up more". Haringey, north London, has the highest proportion, at 4.4%.

Ipse dixit!

Isn't it interesting how these people who are basically hostile to our worldview, suddenly, when it suits them, treat Adolf Hitler as a man whose every casual word must be taken as an inviolable commandment? The assumption seems to be that there is no general idea, no substance in national-socialism, except to copy Adolf Hitler on every point.

In my prekid days, I lived with my wife in a shaded little bungalow in Palm Beach, Fla. The evenings were balmy, and I thought nothing of getting dinner rolling, then coaxing my wife into a little preprandial fling. What better way could there have been to pass the time while the charcoal turned to burger-searing embers? There was no better appetizer, and the meal afterward was remarkably satisfying. The conversation that followed had an uncommon ease.

He pleaded not guilty to the charges.
Police say on April 20th Thomas wrote an ethnically charged message on the bathroom wall at the high school in Birmingham.

If convicted of the felony charge, Thomas could face two years in jail with the possibility of an additional 5-thousand dollars in fines.
The judge let him out on a $20,000 personal bond and said Thomas was not to leave his house except for work or medical reasons.

Russia's Winter Olympics slips into controversy over 'Nazi images'

When the billboards were put up, the Russian art collective Voina, itself known for its controversial painting of a 65-metre penis on a drawbridge in St Petersburg, tweeted: "On Pushkinskaya Square opposite Gap, there is a huge advertisement, openly fascist in style, for elite housing in Sochi."

Degot and others said the style and pose of the subjects in the images was heavily suggestive of Nazi art which stresses racial purity and superiority.

The Guardian has learned that the images of the sportsmen were produced by Doping-Pong, a St Petersburg-based design company which uses a swastika as one of its online "banners".

One of the company's recent projects is a series of erotic photographs of two young women, one called a "fa" (fascist), the other an "antifa" (anti-fascist activist), who grapple with each other in a wrestling ring and tear off each other's clothes. The "fa" appears to win the fight and triumphantly wraps herself in a Nazi flag.

Von Trier's remarks stirred up reporters, and left Dunst and co-stars such as Charlotte Gainsbourg sitting uneasily alongside their director at a press conference Wednesday after his apocalyptic drama "Melancholia" had its first screening.

In an interview afterward, von Trier said he had been joking and did not think people took his comments seriously.

The difference, the new beginning remains within our grasp, easily obtainable, but concealed in the raiment of the unknown.

Step off the brink and trust to the parachute of the mind to see you through.

The alternative can only exercise an appeal to the young, single male, as it always has throughout history.

Obesity researchers from Yale University say that online news outlets overwhelmingly use negative images of overweight people - in ill-fitting clothes or eating fast food - to illustrate stories about obesity. The practice perpetuates fat stigma, the researchers say, and may contribute to obesity itself.
For the new study, the researchers looked at 429 news stories about obesity, along with their accompanying photos, published on five major news websites. Of the photos depicting overweight or obese people, the study found, 72% portrayed them "in a negative, stigmatizing manner."

Burke, cofounder of a ministry dedicated to "healing the pain of abortion," sets up the story: "In 1975, when he was in his late 20s and the lead singer for the band Aerosmith, Tyler persuaded the parents of his 14-year-old girlfriend, Julia Holcomb, to make him her legal guardian so that they could live together in Boston."

Cold cuts are pretty much delicious little hostels for listeria—a bacteria that can cause serious food poisoning, and even kill vulnerable populations like babies, the elderly, and the sick. That's why doctors advise pregnant women to not eat them, and why the CDC suggests that older people reheat their "cold" cuts to 165 degrees before eating them.
But I've long wondered: Why are listeria able to get such a foothold on a food product that's already been cooked, and that is generally stored in refrigerators? Shouldn't those two factors impede bacterial growth?

FORT PIERCE — An apparent pork rind rampage at a food market landed an “irate and cursing” man in jail this week, according to a police report.
The manager/owner of the market told Fort Pierce police that Anthony Wilson, 39, entered the establishment and “began ripping open six bags of Pork Skins.”
In general, pork rinds are deep-fried, cured pork skin pieces. The irregular, Styrofoam-like puffed curls typically are sold in plastic bags with barbecue and/or other flavorings. Fried pork skins are not to be confused with pickled pork rinds, a rich and buttery — much like foie gras — treat often enjoyed refrigerated.
In addition to attacking the pork rinds, Wilson stands accused of destroying lottery tickets.

Employment in U.S. Probably Slowed as Companies Curbed Spending

http://www.thebeerbarrel.net/showthread.php?7417-Employment-in-U.S.-Probably-Slowed-as-Companies-Curbed-Spending

The pace of hiring in the U.S. probably cooled in April as companies curbed spending in the face of rising raw-material costs, economists said ahead of a government report today.
Payrolls rose by 185,000 workers last month compared with a 216,000 advance in March, according to the median forecast of 86 economists surveyed by Bloomberg News. The jobless rate may have held at 8.8 percent.
The economic recovery that began in June 2009 may need to generate more jobs to ensure that consumers, whose spending accounts for 70 percent of the economy, will be able to weather rising fuel and food prices. An employment slowdown underscores why Federal Reserve policy makers last week decided to forge ahead with record monetary stimulus to bolster the expansion.
The current, “moderate” rate of job growth “is a pace that really wouldn’t do much for the unemployment rate,” said Scott Brown, chief economist at Raymond James & Associates Inc. in St. Petersburg, Florida. “There’s a lot of slack in the economy, especially in the labor market. Higher gasoline prices have been a restraint in the near-term.”
The Labor Department’s jobs numbers are due at 8:30 a.m. in Washington. Bloomberg survey estimates range from payroll increases of 118,000 to 325,000.
Private payrolls, which exclude government positions, are forecast to rise by 200,000 following a 230,000 gain the previous month, according to the survey median. The projected April increase would be the smallest in three months.
